TORONTO, October 21, 2009: Once again, ole hosted its pop+urban songcamp this September in Hollywood, bringing together hit Canadian and U.S. songwriters. This third consecutive ole songcamp follows past events held in Hollywood and Toronto and was co-presented by Foxx King Entertainment and the Musicians Institute with sponsorship support from: The Canada Music Fund, SOCAN, BMI, ASCAP, Major Bob Music, Puma, SESAC and NUVO.
The weeklong event (Sept 21st to 28th) brought together select hit songwriters from across the continent with the goal of creating new material for major label recording artists while expanding the writers' creative networks and publisher partnerships. Each day of the camp was a unique and intensely creative experience, starting with an A&R presentation in the morning, a writing session in the afternoon and demo session in the evening. The 30 participating songwriters were partnered off into small groups at the onset of each day featuring both top-line writers and track producers; the majority of whom had never worked together or even met before. The spontaneity and intensity of the camp challenged the writers to grow beyond their existing capacities to create some 40 new copyrights specifically written for major label artists currently in need of songs for forthcoming releases.
Among the key songwriter participants at this year's songcamp were ole's: Alex Greggs, Alonzo, Dave Kopatz, Dru, JC Smith, Justin Forsley, Steven Lee Olsen and Tebey; Foxx King's: Darhio Wonder, Taleen and duo The Write Chix (Bobbie Griffin & Jazzy Bailey); Major Bob Music's Shane Stevens; along with Aimee Proal, Beau Dozier, Bluetooth, Deanna DellaCioppa, Hunnid, Jenny Karr, Kevin Barnes, Lauren Evans, trio N.U.M. (Fred Anthony aka "Tony V", Milana Leybovich, Thomas "Tommy" Beringer), Rosemarie Tan (BWB), Stacy Barthe, Steph Jones, Sydney Nycole, Tiffany Fred and Wow Jones.
Industry executives were on hand to meet the writers and offer insight on the kinds of music they and their respective artists were looking for. These included label execs Max Gousse (Island/Def Jam Music Group), Gary Bowen (Emblem Music), Steven Melrose (EMI Music), Daniel Werner (Mercury Records), Raj Jadeja (Atlantic Records) and Aaron Bay-Schuck (Atlantic Records), as well as music supervisor Rebecca Rienks from Creative Control.
"The beauty of the songcamp is that it brings together writers from various genres, writing teams, locales and musical backgrounds," says ole's Qiana Conley, Creative Director West Coast and organizer of the event. "This year's songcamp built on the foundation of our previous years' achievements; corralling the best of today and tomorrow's pop and urban songwriters and producers."
On partnering up with ole for this year's camp, LaRonda Sutton, Senior Vice President, Music Development and Production for Foxx King Entertainment commented, "When approached by ole to co-sponsor this year's songcamp, we felt this strategic partnership helped further our purpose of creating amazing content for the masses. Music is the common thread for our film, television, and radio departments. There's no better way to strengthen our foundation than promoting the creation of great copyrights. It was an awesome experience."
ole and tanjola writer Alex Greggs (South Rakkas Crew) comments, "Finally! A publisher that knows how to do songcamp right! Everyone that attended was top-notch and all had past cuts on the charts. In one week I got five amazing songs done and I already have bites on three of them from [top artists]. I did not want the week to end; everyday was a fresh start and inspiring." Foxx King writer Jazmine "Jazzy" Bailey (The Write Chix), describes her experience, "I built some amazing working relationships, and got a chance to work with writers I wouldn't have ever worked with any other way."
"It was such an honour to be a part of the songcamp. I feel so incredibly blessed to have worked with such a gifted group of people. It turned out to be one of the most challenging, exciting, and inspiring experiences I've had thus far in my writing career," recounts Nashville-based, Major Bob writer Shane Stevens.
Just as important for ole was the opportunity to support music's future through the inclusion of students from the Musicians Institute.
"The songcamp provided invaluable real-world experience to our audio engineering and performance students," said Monica Mancillas, Director of Audio Engineering for the Musicians Institute. "This year's camp, like last year's, was infused with a creative energy that fits well with MI's unique musical spirit."
Conley concludes, "we completed our 3rd annual pop+urban songcamp with over 40 newly shared copyrights with equally established writers and publishers, expanded branding for the event and the company at large in the pop and urban community, strengthened relationships in the highly competitive A&R and film & TV music sectors and have already secured interest from participating A&Rs with songcamp produced songs for such artists as Rihanna, Robyn Troup, Kylie Minogue, Toni Braxton, Michelle Williams, with many more to come."
